Frequently Asked Questions

The things people usually ask.

Bookings, referrals, fees, telehealth, what to expect at a first appointment — and what to do if you need help urgently.

Do I need a GP referral?

For Medicare rebates, you will always require a referral from a GP or other medical specialist. This applies to all psychiatric consultations and to psychotherapy sessions where Medicare rebates are claimed.

Self-referrals are accepted for private psychotherapy enquiries (no Medicare rebate in that case) and for supervision enquiries.

How do I book an appointment?

Appointments are booked directly through whichever clinic you'd like to attend — Blue Fig Clinic (Sydney CBD) or Dolphin Tribe (Baulkham Hills). Reception can also help arrange telehealth where it's clinically appropriate.

What's a typical wait time for a first appointment?

It varies depending on appointment type and clinic, but new patient appointments are typically available within a few weeks. Reception can give you a current estimate when you submit your referral. Urgent presentations are triaged on a case-by-case basis — please call the clinic directly.

How long is a first consultation?

Initial psychiatric consultations are usually 45 to 50 minutes — enough to take a focused history, understand what brought you in, and start mapping out a care plan together. A comprehensive psychiatric assessment for adults generally takes 2 appointments, and for children 3 appointments. Follow-up appointments and psychotherapy sessions are typically 45 to 50 minutes.

Are fees Medicare-rebatable?

Yes — with a current GP or specialist referral, Medicare rebates apply for psychiatric consultations. The clinics will explain the gap and out-of-pocket amount at the time of booking. Mental Health Treatment Plans (MHTPs) and Better Access program rebates also apply to eligible psychotherapy sessions.

What types of psychotherapy do you offer?

I'm trained across a range of evidence-based modalities — including psychodynamic psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Attachment-Based Family Therapy (ABFT), Gottman Method couples therapy, and play therapy for younger children. The choice of approach is tailored to what you're bringing — see types of psychotherapy for more.

What conditions do you treat in adults?

I treat a wide range of adult psychiatric presentations, including anxiety, mood disorders, bipolar disorder, complex trauma and PTSD, personality difficulties, perinatal mental health, perimenopausal depression, and adult ADHD and autism. See conditions for the full list.

Can I see you for both adult psychiatry and psychotherapy?

Often, yes. One of the benefits of seeing a psychiatrist-psychotherapist is that diagnostic, medication and psychotherapeutic work can sit with one clinician, rather than being split across providers. We'll discuss what's right for you at the first consultation.

What does a telehealth appointment involve?

Telehealth is by secure video — either a follow-up psychiatry consultation or a psychotherapy session. It's available Australia-wide. New patient psychiatry assessments are usually conducted in person where possible; certain follow-ups and psychotherapy work translate well to telehealth.

How do you approach child and adolescent psychiatry?

My approach is holistic and family-inclusive. Assessments cover development, family context, attachment, school and peer functioning — not just symptoms. Wherever possible, I work alongside parents, schools, paediatricians and GPs to support the whole child. Early intervention is a strong focus.

Do you provide reports for NDIS, insurance or court?

Independent medico-legal and third-party reports are considered on a case-by-case basis and are not part of the standard clinical service. Please contact the clinic to discuss scope, timeframes and fees.

What if I'm in crisis?

This practice isn't a crisis service. If you're in immediate danger, call 000. For urgent mental health support, contact Lifeline on 13 11 14, the NSW Mental Health Line on 1800 011 511, or your nearest hospital emergency department.
