Condition

Bipolar disorder — assessment & treatment in Sydney.

Bipolar disorder is a complex mood condition involving emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). Dr Sangeetha Makielan offers compassionate, evidence-based, neurobiologically informed care for adolescents and adults.

What it is

What is bipolar disorder?

Bipolar disorder affects mood, energy, sleep and the ability to function. It typically involves distinct periods of:

  • Mania or hypomania

Elevated or irritable mood, increased activity and energy, racing thoughts, reduced need for sleep, impulsive decision-making.

  • Depression

Low mood, loss of interest, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness.

There are different types of bipolar disorder — including Bipolar I, Bipolar II and Cyclothymic Disorder — each requiring a tailored treatment approach. Bipolar disorder is one of the conditions I manage within my adult psychiatry practice, with an integrated treatment plan.

Common signs

Symptoms worth taking seriously.

Experiences vary, but common signs include:

  • Drastic changes in mood and energy levels
  • Risky or impulsive behaviour during elevated phases
  • Sleep disturbances — including reduced need for sleep during highs
  • Difficulty maintaining relationships or employment
  • Periods of depression with low motivation, sadness or hopelessness
  • Family history of bipolar disorder or mood instability

Early diagnosis and management are essential to reduce the impact on daily life and to protect long-term functioning.
